Snow trekking at Lake Shikotsu
Lake Shikotsu situated on the outskirts of Sapporo is also home to a great snow trekking experience.
Nominated 11 consecutive years for having the highest quality water in Japan, this lake offers many attraction points that can be enjoyed across the 4 seasons, including the Nanajo Otaki waterfalls.
Visitors can go on a trek to the waterfalls, walking past footsteps of deers, foxes, and bears (they’re hibernating, don’t worry!) along the way.
The waterfall itself in the wintertime almost looks like an ice curtain, with many layers of ice pillars forming over each other.
For Hokkaido visitors who have a little extra time, going the extra way to Lake Shikotsu to check out this frozen waterfall is definitely a worthwhile experience.
