Plan introduction(Beekeeper experience)
In this tour, you will experience beekeeping at Seo Apiary, a mobile beekeeper.
Seo Apiary is a mobile beekeeper based in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
Mr. Seo has been leading a part of a swarm of bees north to Furano since late April, and until late May, he mainly supplies bees for pollen crossing to Furano melon and watermelon farmers in Furano City.
This beehive plays a very important role in the rental business of bees, which is an essential part of Furano.
The movement of honeybees changes from season to season.
The work of beekeeping also changes in accordance with the changes in the movement of the bees.
From June to mid-August, the bees are very active, so you can enjoy seeing them flying around as you often see on TV.
You will also learn about the differences and roles of common queen and worker bees.
If possible, you can taste the honey straight from the beehive!
In this tour, you will see the work of the Seo Apiary and the actual work of the bees.
In this tour, you will learn how the queen bee works, how a beehive is structured, and what the job of a “beekeeper” is like through this beekeeping experience.
If you’re coming with family or friends, some of you may not be comfortable with bugs, but we’ll have a tent on site as a safety zone, so bees are a fear, bugs are a pain!
You can rest here if you want to!
You will be able to see up close how bees work, what they do, and what the beekeepers do.

※Please avoid scented items such as perfume, hairspray, etc. that attract the bees on the day of your experience.
※If you have long hair, we ask that you tie it in the back so that it can be tied in one piece.
Hair styles such as buns and ponytails can get in the way when wearing a netted hat, so it’s preferable to simply put them together in the back for ease.
※From July to August, temperatures in Furano can reach 30 degrees or higher. Basically, you will be wearing protective clothing over your clothing, so it will be quite hot depending on the temperature.
Therefore, we recommend T-shirts and pants made of fast-drying synthetic fibers.
※Please be sure to bring socks if you are wearing light clothing, such as sandals, because you will be asked to change your shoes into boots.
Long boots are available for rent. Please be prepared with socks, as many people will be using them.
※For children in the lower elementary grades, long sleeves and long trousers made of slippery jersey material are best.
