This plan is a taxi tour to see the historical buildings in Otaru City with a local taxi guide who knows the city well.
There are many historical buildings in Otaru, which are designated as important cultural assets, and you will see them and the cityscape of Otaru.
This tour will take you to the sightseeing spots of the following model course.

Information about the model course
Former Otaru Branch of the Nihon Yusen Company
This is the former Otaru Branch of the Nihon Yusen Company, which is also designated as an important cultural property.
Construction began in 1904, and the two-story stone building in the early modern European revival style, which was rare at the time, is one of the highlights of the building’s solemn atmosphere.
Nishin Goten (Herring Palace)
Nishin Goten is a mansion of the former Aoyama family, who made a fortune by herring fishing, which was once very popular in Otaru, and was registered as an important cultural property.
It is now left as a tourist attraction.
The style of the building is a blend of Japanese and Western styles, and the paintings on the fusuma screens and the wood are all luxurious.
The building was featured in the popular manga, Golden Kamui, and is one of Otaru’s most popular tourist attractions.
Shukutsu Panorama Observatory

The Shukutsu Panorama Observatory is one of the most beautiful spots in Otaru.
The panoramic view of the ocean, known as Shakotan Blue, and the Otaru Aquarium are in the vicinity.
Financial Museum (Former Otaru Branch of the Bank of Japan)
The Otaru Branch of the Bank of Japan is one of the designated cultural assets of Otaru City.
It was built by Kingo Tatsuno, who was involved in the construction of Tokyo Station, and the spiral staircase and mortar coating are said to have been created using the most advanced construction technology of the Taisho era.
Sakai-machi Street
Sakai-machi Street is the best sightseeing street in Otaru where you can enjoy shopping.
It is lined with stores selling Otaru’s famous sweets, wine, and seafood, so you can fill your heart and stomach here.
Otaru Canal
The last stop on the sightseeing taxi tour is Otaru Canal!
This is one of the most popular tourist spots in Otaru.
If you take a photo at the Otaru Canal with the retro atmosphere of the warehouses in the background, you will be satisfied with your Otaru sightseeing taxi tour!
